Retired Police Officer Council News
August 2010

Greetings from your Retired Police Officers Council (“RPOC”) Board Members.  Hope this finds you well, contending with our summer heat.  The past month of July probably found most of us trying to stay cool or making travel plans to avoid the hot weather.  The hurricane season has arrived with the first hurricane having already come and gone.  Be sure to adhere to all instructions for preparation for what is supposed to be a very active season.

As part of our new series highlighting RPOC Members, this issue, I am in the spotlight..  Remember, we encourage others to send in their bio’s and become a feature of this column.

Houston, Texas was home until I enlisted in the Army in 1955 as a Military Policeman, serving at Ft. Ord, California, Ft. Devans, Mass., Virginia, Korea, Japan, Germany, Greenland and Washington. D.C..  I was often detached to Special Services, playing basketball and baseball.  I played on the basketball team that won the 1961 European championship.  As Provost Sgt, .I was stationed in Korea, Germany and Greenland.  I ended my military career in Washington, D.C., as Desk Sgt. for the Armed Forces Police Detachment, which was comprised of members of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines.  I ended my service career after 8-1/2 yrs, in June, 1963 and one month later joined the Virginia State Police as a State Trooper, where I remained until April 1967.  I was then hired by the Dade County Public Safety Department.  I served one year in uniform patrol and then went on to Robbery Division.  In January, 1970, I transferred into what was to become the highlight of my career.  I served in Homicide for a total of 17-1/2 years.  I was selected as “Officer of the Month” for Dade County twice in 18 months, the first as acknowledgement for capturing a serial rapist and the other for clearing multiple homicides for the City of Miami.  In 1986, I transferred to the Mayor’s office, where I was Sgt-at-Arms for the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.  In 1989, I was detached to the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department, as Bureau Commander of Internal Affairs, overseeing background and criminal investigations.  I remained there until I retired in July, 1999.

I currently reside in Palmetto Bay with my wife, Nikki.  My life continues to be dominated by women…my daughter, Jaime and granddaughters, Raychel and Alexa.

Retirement has afforded me the privilege of spending a considerable amount of time on our 234 acre farm in Georgia, doing what I do best…hunting deer.

Coming Attraction for next month’s Spotlight – Sgt. Robert Hoelscher.  Your contributions to our “Spotlight” articles are welcomed!!!

We continue to get applications for new membership from retired MDPD personnel.  Our membership is now over 1,200 strong.  Our Membership Secretary, PBA’s Margarita Vasquez, has been of enormous assistance in recently accomplishing a mailout (invitation to join RPOC) to PBA members, some of who have retired since 2007, but have not yet joined RPOC.  Thanks, Margarita.
We regret to inform you of the passing of RPOC’s oldest living member, Ben Newton, 91, of Yalala, Florida.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Until next month, may all your news be good news.

President
